Tertiary Prevention and Care of Complex Medical-Surgical Patients and Families

Examination of nursing assessment and management of acute and chronic health problems of acutely ill adults. Theory content in assessment, health history, and diagnostic reasoning with emphasis on social, cultural, and developmental influences. Integration of knowledge of pathophysiology, pharmacology, stress and adaptation, adult development theory, therapeutic interventions, patient safety, evidence-based practice, and communication concepts as applied to care of acutely ill medical-surgical patients, with complex and comorbid conditions, and their families. Concept of nurses as bedside scientists, with emphasis on critical and contextual thinking skills and diagnostic reasoning. Nursing process, ethical principles, clinical research, evidence-based practice, and clinical thinking that maximize patient safety and quality care for acutely ill adults employed during clinical experiences.
