Survey of major groups of organisms from oceans and on land that can be found in fossil record of California, and relation of them to some of major events in history of life. Emphasis on how faunas have changed over time, especially during periods of diversification and extinction. Consideration of what can be ascertained about life and environments of past from fossils of California and rocks that contain them.
