Women of Color and Social Movements

Survey of the participation of women, trans women, and femmes of color (WTFC) in social movements for social justice. Examination of the roles of WTFC as grassroots activists, leaders, and visionary thinkers in those movements, and exploration of the construction of their political identity as a basis for contemporary organizing for social change building movements for justice. Through discussion, using readings and films as foundation, examination of the emergence and effectiveness of social movements for gender and racial justice. Examination of the experiences of WTFC in class struggles; labor movements; immigrant rights; disability justice; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer equality; and contact with the criminal legal system and incarceration. Exploration of how intersectionality impacts organizing and strategies for actualizing social change.
