Introduction to Field-Based Research Methods

Introduction to methods, techniques, and issues in conducting field-based research, including nature, uses, and limitations of major data-gathering procedures, ethical concerns, sampling, checks and controls, teamwork, interventions, and results as not only tangible and impersonal outcomes of inquiry but also personal and intangible. Through readings, discussion, and hands-on exercises, students learn how to plan fieldwork projects and write proposals, prepare consent forms and deal with ethical issues, observe behavior, construct questionnaires, interview, use audiovisual documentation, and manage and present data.
