Urban and Suburban Sociology

History and present condition of cities and suburbs in America, with stress on global cities such as New York and Los Angeles, and comparisons to London and Shanghai. Process of suburbanization as it began in early 19th century and still continues. Analysis of city politics, house and architectural styles, crime, urban terror, public housing and ghettos, segregation and integration of neighborhoods, question of gentrification, immigration, urban culture (especially art, museums, and movie and music industries), and environmentalism. Concurrently scheduled with course C191N.
