Limited to juniors/seniors. Study of relationship between society’s military and its social organization in general, with particular attention to shock-based civic militarism characteristic of the West. Topics include honor, discipline, bureaucracy, conscription, logistics, total war, guerilla war, terrorism, and counterinsurgency. Reading, discussion, and development of culminating project.
