Discussion of different transportation systems and operational characteristics, and how these reflect on individual traveler experiences. Study of individual aspects of urban travel—why and how people travel—and introduction to a range of microeconomic concepts for understanding and analyzing individual traveler behavior. Introduction to the ways transportation system and policy challenges can be addressed and to a range of microeconomic concepts and tools. Development of skills for applying these tools in transportation systems and policy evaluations. In transportation engineering and public policy, a basic understanding of how decisions are made (at various scales), and how the impacts of those decisions can be distributed across society, is critical for future transportation professionals and creating a transportation system that serves the broad needs of society.
