Revolutionary Fantasies: Inequality and Protest in Contemporary Science Fiction

Speculative fiction—including science fiction, fantasy, and alternative history—has proven a fruitful arena for writers to interpret the past, illuminate the present, and explore the future. Analysis of a selection of contemporary speculative fiction by diverse writers including writers of color, immigrant writers, queer writers, and young writers. Investigation into how these writers portray inequality and how (or whether) they invite readers to imagine a more just and revolutionary future. Consideration of topics such as climate change, immigration, and technology; and investigate intersectional categories of identity such as race, gender, and class. Study draws from contemporary speculative fiction in order to investigate and imagine a better world.
