Working It: Women, Work, and Family

Examination of working women in U.S. history from 19th-century midwives to 21st-century sex workers through film, oral history, and traditional forms of scholarship. Exploration of personal and work life of women from variety of intersectional categories including class, race, ethnicity, sexuality, and immigration status with focus on systems that have shaped workplace experiences for women over time, including gender discrimination, sexual harassment, public policy, unionization, and reproductive health. Special attention given to strategies women have utilized to shape their work experience, and to improve working conditions for themselves and their working-class sisters.
