Introduction to debate on international human rights. History of natural rights and examination of rise of human rights regimes during 20th century. Drawing upon art, journalism, philosophy, psychology, political science, law, history, literature, and film to investigate how this shift from natural rights to human rights involves reimagination of humanity and the human being in modern society. Students engage in comparative and interdisciplinary discussions exploring how and why idea of human rights demands critical imagination.
