Study of episodes and metaphors of plague in Western culture from ancients into age of AIDS. Topics include scripture, ancient tragedy, Black Death, realist novel, high aesthetic metaphors of plague, Nazi propaganda, existential and absurdist thought, postwar cinema, contemporary American theater, and modern science and medicine.
