Designed for juniors/seniors. Analysis of relations of power and cultural expressions of dominance and resistance in late imperial China (1000 to 1700), with emphasis on interplay of economic forces, ideas, and social and political institutions. Examination of institutions of state, family, school, and city; idioms of folk religion, death, and afterlife; political, legal, and medical discourses of body, personhood, and social identity; love, sexuality, and private life.
