Introduction to Public/Applied History

Designed for juniors/seniors. General survey of historical definitions of, and debates about, public and applied history, that is, history in non-academic settings across different periods and geographic regions. Survey supplemented with case studies drawn from historical research used to inform museum exhibitions, public policy, historic commemoration, digital projects, and documentary and popular media productions. Through assigned readings, analytical writing, and collaborative research, students engage with variety of approaches, tools, and media. Research on local historical topics to foster well-grounded understanding of how history is applied and interpreted in variety of places, settings, and media for variety of audiences and purposes.
