GEOG 143Contemporary Black Geographies
Geography · 4 units · Undergraduate upper division (100-199)
Black geographies is an interdisciplinary field of study, which considers the poetics of Black life and ecological and political economies of inequality. Such dynamic thinking enables identification of the problems of structural racism—including anti-Black policing, poverty, and climate injustice—and envisioning of how a world without such violence might look and feel. Through readings of contemporary and landmark Black geographic authors and studies of local, U.S., and transnational Black geographies, analysis of Blackness, and race, being rooted in a spatial relationship; the category of Black being produced by economic transaction, dispossession from land, and the exploitation of particular bodies’ life and labor; blackness not wholly being confined by these depraved material conditions; and Black life being central to an ongoing transformative and liberatory relationship to carceral capitalist space.
