EPS SCI CM114A
Aquatic Geomicrobiology: Metabolisms
Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences · 4 units · Undergraduate upper division (100-199)
(Same as Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences CM114A.) Study of fundamental geomicrobiological metabolisms and biogeochemical reactions occurring in aquatic systems and how these processes interact with environment. Metabolisms include photoautotrophic (anoxygenic and oxygenic photosynthesis), chemoheterotrophic (fermentation and respiration of organic matter), photoheterotrophic (organic matter degradation with light), and chemoautotrophic (iron, nitrogen, manganese, methane, and sulfur oxidation) pathways. Introduction of principals of bioenergetics (adenosine triphosphate production, Gibbs free energy, chemiosmosis, thermodynamic calculations) and biological isotope fractionation. Concurrently scheduled with course CM214A.
P/NP or letter grading.
