Culture and Imperialism

Exploration of relationship between culture and imperialism through lens of literary texts to raise questions about what study of empire tells about relationship between power and knowledge. Discussion of shifting patterns and paradigms of imperial rule, including way both metropolitan and peripheral or colonial spaces were transformed. Emphasis may be on particular historical period or may adopt thematic approach, such as Orientalism. Topics may include construction of gender, race, otherness, nature, religion, and nation. May be repeated for credit with topic or instructor change.
