EDUC 154B
Community-Engaged Research in Clinical and Educational Settings
Education · 4 units · Undergraduate upper division (100-199)
Study centers on participatory inquiry with youth and community partners, with particular attention to Photovoice and Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) as relational research practices. Students work alongside community school students, teachers, clinicians, and Wellness Collaborative for Research and Education Activities to Transform and Empower (WeCREATE) partners to explore local communities and relationships that connect schools, families, and health-care institutions. Through Photovoice, students support youth in noticing, documenting, and reflecting on everyday experiences; and in developing questions that matter to them. Activities include active participation in a community-based heart clinic and school-based projects, which serve to build and sustain school-community relationships. Research is incorporated throughout these engagements, positioning students as collaborators attentive to context, relationships, and responsibility when working with others.
