Knowledge of art history valuable but not required. Assuming that literature and visual arts are in some degree expressions of cultural and philosophical patterns of eras, study of relationships between writers and movements in painting, architecture, and sculpture. Interdisciplinary investigation of similarities and differences between plastic and verbal arts in comparative study. May be repeated for credit with instructor and/or topic change. May be concurrently scheduled with course C160. Graduate students required to read works in original languages.
