Classics · 4 units · Undergraduate upper division (100-199)
Introduction to classical reception studies, a subfield of classics that examines the ongoing presence, influence, and cultural uses of Greco-Roman antiquity across time and space. Through a set of theory-based readings and analysis of specific case studies (drawing on a range of cultural iterations including the Renaissance, Black classicism, Latin American epic poetry, post-colonial political discourse, and contemporary film), students develop a critical acumen for defining the nuances and interpretive potential of classical reception.
