Exploration of relationship between Chinese language, society, and culture. Discussion of fundamental role that language plays in Chinese social life and cultural practices while simultaneously exploring how social and cultural factors impact ways in which Chinese language is organized. Main focus on language and thought patterns, language and gender, language and politics, language and commerce, language and law, language and arts, and language and globalization.
