Leadership and Social Change

Exploration of different modes of leadership and consideration of how effective leadership can bring about positive social change. We live in period of extraordinary opportunity and challenge—in which breathtaking technological advances sit alongside breathtaking cynicism and corruption. Examination of how effective and inspiring leaders can lead in such environment, if it is possible to make difference and effect change in face of deep structural inequality, criteria that make effective leader, and if each of us bears within ourselves leadership potential. Exploration of past models of successful leadership and different models of present-day leadership, drawing on inspiring examples from social activism, politics, religion, law, philanthropy, and education. Students are encouraged to formulate their own models of leadership. Three to four day experiential learning opportunity in leadership development off campus.
