Historical overview of national and institutional language policies, especially schooling, in U.S. as context to understanding social, legal, and political constraints on bilingualism. Definitions and development of language policy and planning, history of general and educational language policies in U.S., demographic profile of language diversity, and current language and educational policy issues in U.S. Comparisons with selected international cases. Concurrently scheduled with course C179.
