Racialization of Arab and Muslim Communities on the War on Terror

Examination of socially manufactured racial constructions of Arab and Muslim communities before and after September 11, 2001. Focus on paradox of how and why Arab/Muslim communities in the U.S. are legally classified as white while simultaneously racialized by state and extra-state forces as others, subjects of suspicion, and threats to Western ideals of liberal democracy. Examination of how Arab/Muslim communities have been targets of state sanctioned violence, exclusion, and repression. Study engages with readings across disciplines, various forms of cultural production, and Arab/Muslim activists and organizers.
