Maltese is the national language of the Mediterranean island nation of Malta, and an official language of the European Union. Derived from North African Arabic, it has been transformed by contract with Sicilian, standard Italian, and English. Students learn to read written materials and understand spoken standard Maltese. Study also samples the extensive linguistic literature on Maltese.
