Global Hip Hop

(Same as Ethnomusicology M123.) Overview of the emergence and development of rap music throughout the world. Exploration of the development of hip-hop culture in the U.S., and the historical development of the genre in various global locales. Exploration moves through significant regions in hip-hop culture throughout the world, providing histories and genealogies of geographical musical areas. Discussion throughout of more abstract concepts pertinent to rap music such as the emergence of a global hip-hop culture, race as it pertains in rap music, post-regionalism, gender and sexuality in rap music, and the relationship between rap and protest.
