AF AMER 293
Epistemology and Power in Africana Religious Studies
African American Studies · 4 units · Graduate courses (200-299)
Exploration of how race, gender, and power shape the way Black religion is thought about. Study engages contemporary critical theory, methods, and practices that shape race, religion, and spirituality. Working at the intersection of Black and religious studies, study illustrates the contingency and conditionality of these fields and sharpens critiques of colonial hegemonies, religious racism, and religious statecraft. Using the work of Dianne Stewart Diakite, Tracey Hucks, Charles Long, Audre Lorde, Sylvia Wynter, and others as guides, students have opportunities to apply what they have learned to what is happening in the world.
